More than 90% of the people with diabetes suffer from diabetes type 2, a form of diabetes also known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Around 8% of the American population suffers from one form of diabetes and 90% of them suffer from type 2 diabetes. What’s even more disturbing, obesity prevalence in adults suffering from type 2 diabetes is continuously growing as a newly released study from the Journal of Diabetes and its Complications shows.
Unlike type 1 diabetes, which is a fatal autoimmune disease and nearly all patients need insulin injections in order to survive, type 2 diabetes is a form of insulin resistance developed over time. Family history and age were considered determinant factors for diabetes type 2 along with central obesity. As more and more children and teenagers suffer from this disease obesity was found to be one of the major causes for diabetes type 2. More than 50% of diabetes type 2 patients are obese.
New study reveals obesity as the leading agent for the development of type 2 diabetes and shocking statistic show 1 in 5 diabetes type 2 patients is morbidly obese. The study was conducted by Dr. Holly Kramer from Loyola University.
